THE TAOS HUM

Some residents and visitors in the small city of Taos, New Mexico,

 have for years been annoyed and puzzled by a mysterious and faint low-frequency hum in the desert air. 

Oddly, only about 2 percent of Taos residents report hearing the sound.

ZONA DE SILENCIA

 There exist a number of "accursed sites" on the surface of our planet.

 Drive 400 hundred miles west of El Paso, and you enter into

an unforgiving section of foreboding semi-arid desert landscape

that begs for mercy but offers none.

The Zone of Silence was first identified in the 1930's by pilot, Francisco Sarabia

when he claimed his radio stopped working and the plane's instruments went wild

while flying over the area in northern Mexico.

It was later deduced that radio waves cannot be transmitted in and above the area

 due to local magnetic fields.

In 1970 a faulty American Athena missile fired from the White Sands Missile Base

 in nearby New Mexico went off course inexplicably

 and crashed into the mysterious desert region

and made the world aware of the unique and apparently unusual properties of the area.


Subsequently a team of U.S. Air Force investigators, with Mexican government approval,

journeyed to the crash site and made an unexpected discovery.

Within an unspecified and sometimes shifting area within the Zone,

radio signals fail to travel through the air, creating a type of dark zone.

No television, radio, short wave, microwave, or satellite signals seem to penetrate this zone.

The name, Zone of Silence, was quickly adopted,

and researchers began flocking to the remote location shortly thereafter.

INVASION!

As America was reeling from Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941,

the West Coast was invaded by something mysterious:


Early morning on February 2, 1942:


Incoming craft sirens were first heard in the Los Angeles area.

 Many Americans were expecting another wave of Japanese fighter planes,

and thought this is what they would see as they left their homes, and ventured outside.

How wrong they were!

The first sightings of a large UFO would be made in Culver City, and Santa Monica.

 The whole California southern section was searching the night skies in a matter of minutes.

What they saw were beaming searchlights illuminating the night sky,

all of them converging on one thing: a UFO.

The beams of light would soon be accompanied by tracer fire from anti-aircraft artillery,

all of the rounds aiming at the invading craft.

The giant UFO would take direct hit after hit, yet without damage for over an hour.

The next day, the military claimed it was that all too convenient explanation: a "weather balloon."  

To suggest that the Coast Guard continued firing at a balloon for over an hour

implies a degree of incompetence, to say the least!

Here is more eeriness related to the events depicted in my latest novel:

The Spanish soldier Gil Perez in 1593 lifted his right foot up from the dust in front of the Governor's Palace in Manila only to place it down on the cobblestones of Plaza Mayor in Mexico City. 

 In 1959 tourist Rick Stevens stepped out of his car in Reno only to place both feet on the grass of Juarez, Mexico.  

 Space can bend like fabric.  It happens.  Rarely.  But it happens. 

Wolf Howl was born with the ability to do it on demand, along with other disturbing talents.  Don't envy him.  Because of that fact he has been hunted all his life.

DID YOU KNOW?

The scientific possibility of parallel universes first arrived with Hugh Everett’s “Relative State Formulation” in 1957. Not long after, Bryce Seligman DeWitt renamed Everett’s theory, introducing it to the rest of the world as the term “Many-worlds Interpretation.”

One day in 2008 in Spain, Lerina Garcia woke up in a world — our world — that did not belong to her … or so she claimed.

According to the story, as her day progressed she continued to notice “small incongruities,” little things that were just off … as her bed sheets were a different color. But there were big things, too:

“So I went to work in my car, which was parked where I’d always parked, and it was the same office I’d worked in for the last 20 years. But when I got to my department, it wasn’t my department. It has names on the door and mine wasn’t on it. I thought I was on the wrong floor, but no, it was my own floor. I went over to the office’s wireless section and looked myself up. I still worked there, but in another department, reporting to a superior I didn’t even know.”

In 2000 on the Venezuela campus of the University of the Andes, a well-known faculty member left one of the university’s buildings, crossed a parking lot to his parked car, and entered it.  Many saw him as he walked to his car, some even called out to him and waved.

The professor opened his car door, climbed in, sat down, and closed the door. The car sat there unmoving. Eventually, a few curious students went to the car and found it empty.  The professor had been a victim of a multi-verse shift.

In 1954, a strange man arrived in Tokyo with a passport from a country that didn’t exist, called Taured. Japanese customs officials detained the man, but his passport was not a fake: it had the proper stamps, was issued by the country of Taured, and even included Japanese stamps from a previous visit. The man swore that Taured was a European country that had existed for 1,000 years, and he also held other papers, such as bank statements, with the country’s name on them.

After several hours, customs officials eventually placed the man in a hotel, with security nearby to ensure that he did not leave his room, while they checked things out.

The next morning, he was gone. No trace. A manhunt ensued, but there was no point; he had simply vanished.
